Brainspotting
My Brainspotting Journey began in 2017. I saw improvement in my emotional regulation, sleep, and focus. Content that was normally very difficult and that would cause me to shut down in standard talk therapy was able to emerge, be felt at a decreased level of intensity, and neutralize in a way that felt natural. In 2018, I completed the Level 1 Brainspotting training in Denver, Colorado and Level 2 Brainspotting in 2021. I use this modality with clients because of the gentle approach in letting their body lead the healing process.
What is Brainspotting?
Brainspotting is a form of Somatic therapy that can help address a variety of challenges, including overwhelming emotions, hyper-vigilance, anxiety and depression. It works by identifying physical sensations in your body that are connected to emotional or psychological issues. You will be aware of these sensations, while also following a protocol personalized to you. This can help you process and release the underlying emotional or psychological issues that words can’t quite touch. We work with focusing your gaze on a point that allows your body to process emotions, sensations, and beliefs in a grounded container. You aren’t reliving your trauma, you’re creating space for your body to re-organize towards resilience and post-traumatic growth.
Brainspotting is also a great resourcing tool, helping to integrate concepts such as self-worth, acceptance, and positive sensations in the body. Our bodies want to heal, we just need to give them a safe container to do so. Our Brainspotting sessions are a grounded container to allow your body to process what it’s ready to let go of.
Clients describe this sensation as being in a deep meditative state, where they are witnessing thoughts, feelings, and sensations in the body while being aware they are in the present moment. You can talk as much or as little as you like (a huge selling point if you’re sick of retelling and being retraumatized by the same story).

How Brainspotting Works
Brainspotting is a therapy based on EMDR. The theory is that our brains and bodies store memories and emotions in both our conscious and unconscious minds. When we experience a traumatic event, for example, the memory of that event may be too painful for us to consciously process. So, our brains store it away in our unconscious mind and body. Even though we may not be consciously aware of these memories, they can still have a powerful impact on our lives.
Brainspotting can help us to access and process these unconscious memories. By focusing on the physical sensations in our bodies that are connected to these memories, we can start to process them in a restorative way.
